Tropical Pitcher Plants

The tropical pitcher plants are vining plants that belong to the genus Nepenthes (pronounced Nep- enth- Es). They are native to southeast Asia and even Australia. All Nepenthes can be divided into two primary categories based on the elevation of their natural growth. Lowland plants usually require higher humidity. Highland plants are usually more tolerant of lower humidity. The majority of species we offer are highland plants. The pitchers of these plants are also divided into two categories. Younger plants form a dense rosette that produces what are called lower pitchers. Lower pitchers are usually larger, colorful, and have a pair of wings. Eventually all pitcher plants will enter a vining stage in which the plant grows more quickly in height. During this stage, upper pitchers are produced. These are often smaller and less colorful but are more elongated.
